This isn't the best picture, but hopefully you will get the idea. We bought a little cheap desk on Amazon for my son, that turned out to be a little minimal. I made a multi-use shelf add-on setup to it.
I found some melamine shelf board at Lowe's that matched his desktop. Then built a big frame to expand / extend the setup into something more useful.
It was a lot of heat shrink and connectors, but it came out real good - and it's completely custom and conforms to his wishes.
* There is enough material in the setup to make it weighty, so it's real stable
