Built van roof rack with Maker Pipe & 3/4” conduit. Attached the solar panels on top of rack to allow 8 storage bins to sit on the roof. The wind screen is made from painted aluminum paneling from shed. The conduit is covered with zip tied garden hose for Weather proofing & black appearance.
I made the 6 attachment points out of the channel bar, like what they use to attach conduit to houses. Just cut a groove to the center holes
& bolted them together around that factory nub.
I helped remodel a buddy’s bathroom, she paid me by letting me use her HD credit card. TheY carried a couple different brands but I went with Renogy. Everything is Renogy but the solar panels themselves. I originally got the Rover 40 amp charge controller but I added a third panel in front since I posted here. So I swapped it out for the 100 amp Rover. The panels are 300 watts each & they are made for houses. 2 are Seriphim 1 is Trinity. I could stand on them if I trusted the clamps more. The wind screen seems to be working well to keep things more aerodynamic.
I don’t drive with the panels propped open, at least not fast. However the kick stands are very strong & can take strong winds when propped open.
If u are asking if I drive when they are closed, Yes. That is the whole idea. I built the rack & the supports in such a way that the panels are the LID to the rack. I can drive with them latched down then open them to get to my storage bins or lawn chairs, pop up tent, tools when I get to me destination.
We live in California, we are currently in Virginia Fall Leaf Peeping. A few of the clamps broke, from the road shaking, on this 5000 mile road trip so far, but there are Many points of contact. I am in the process of gradually replacing the plastic clips I originally used for metal ones. They are all from the conduit section of the hardware store.
