Just finished a new cart to walk 2 paddle boards and 2 paddles a 1/2 mile to lake shore to launch. Because the paddle boards are long (11' and 12') and will extend well beyond the cart frame, I mounted the handle on the side so the user walks alongside the cart.
I had two problems that I needed to solve:
1 -- I originally had 4 pneumatic caster wheels with post mounts (all 4 swivel). But 4 swivels on uneven outdoor terrain makes for a lot of annoying swivel/vibration. So I needed two rigid wheels and a better brake system (with boards on the cart the caster wheel brakes are a pain to use).
2 -- I needed a fully adjustable handle that could be moved out of the way for loading/unloading the boards but would also be stable enough, in various positions, to push/pull the load and walk it to the lake.
I finally decided to try a used baby stroller which ended up solving both problems.
I deconstructed the stroller and put the back rigid wheels on the cart and ran the brake cable up to the center bar and mounted it there for quick and easy access.
I mounted the stroller handle on the center bar. It "folds" down to be out of the way when loading/unloading boards. It rotates up and has many positions which lock in and are stable. I added 2 telescoping clamps to allow the user to also extend/lengthen the handle further out from the cart, if desired.
The clips for the paddles are mounted on the side bar, opposite the cart handle.
