Our daughter loves watching Fancy Nancy and during one of her medical treatments, she mentioned wanting a canopy bed just like the one in the show.

After a few gentle reminders, she picked out canopy bed curtains with fairy lights from Amazon. I decided to build a simple frame using EMT conduit and Maker Pipe fittings.

How We Built It

  • Simple, Straight Cuts: The frame consists of straight cuts of EMT conduit—no bending required.

  • Assembling the Corners: I didn’t have specialized 90-degree structural corner clamps, so I used standard Maker Pipe clamps and stacked them at the corners to secure the frame.

  • Hanging the Curtains:

    • At the foot of the bed, the curtain is simply tucked behind the bedpost.

    • At the head of the bed, the curtain is hooked onto a Maker Pipe T-connector, with a short piece of EMT conduit and a cap. This hook system keeps the fabric out of the way during medical treatments, ensuring plenty of headroom.

Important Safety Notes

  • Not Attached to the Bed: The frame is independent of the bed and does not connect to the SleepSafe bed.

  • Not for Climbing: Our daughter doesn’t climb on it, but if your child is a climber, this setup may not be safe.

  • Frame Stability:

    • The EMT conduit sits between the mattress and the headboard/footboard for support.

    • To protect the floor, we added 1-inch rubber chair leg tips to the bottom of the conduit.

Finishing Touches

Instead of painting the EMT conduit, we covered it with permanent adhesive vinyl to give it a more polished, less industrial look.

This setup gave our daughter the Fancy Nancy-inspired canopy she wanted while ensuring her medical treatments remained easy and accessible. Hope this helps if you're thinking about building something similar!
