I understand that Maker Pipe is all about using 3/4 EMT conduit. But I'd like to share some experiments I've been doing using one inch bamboo poles as an alternative to EMT in some situations.

Since 3/4 EMT has a nominal outside diameter of .92 inches, a one inch bamboo pole would normally be too 'fat' to fit into a maker pipe connector. I've been able to resolve this by cutting four slits into the end of the pole. Each slit is about two inches long and 1/16 of an inch wide. This is easily done with a band saw, but could also be done with hand tools.

The maker pipe connector squeezes the slits together and the spring back from the bamboo creates a remarkably tight connection.

Obviously, there are considerations such as weight, flexibility, appearance, durability, cost and on and on.

But it is good to have options and this is one of them.

Best regards
